A large new study found that moderate consumption of unsweetened coffee was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, while sweetened coffee did not show the same protective association.

The findings, published June 29 in the European Journal of Nutrition, add to a growing stack of coffee-and-health research suggesting that moderate coffee consumption may be linked to better heart health outcomes. Yet the new paper points to an important and oft-repeated caveat: sugar and other sweeteners obscure the health picture.
