By early 2026, green spaces in the Citadel area will increase by 1.5 times
Renovation work continues at the Citadel, including the planting of new vegetation. By 2026, the area of green spaces is expected to expand to 20,000 square meters, and an open public park will be created within the fortress walls for visitors.
"The Citadel will become greener and more accessible," states the Facebook page of the National Hauszmann Program.
Currently, landscaping of the inner courtyard is underway, with 59 decorative trees and shrubs already planted. Among them are rare dendrological species, such as the Persian ironwood tree. Most of the trees are 20 years old, specially cultivated specimens weighing up to 300 kilograms, requiring the use of a crane for planting.
The inner park of the Citadel and the surrounding walking paths will be adorned not only with trees and shrubs but also with flower beds, manicured lawns, roses, lavender bushes, climbing plants, and grapevines. Sustainable development principles are being considered in the park’s design: rainwater will be used for irrigation, and green roofs with drought-resistant plants will be installed on flat surfaces.
Restoration work is ongoing, including the renovation of the terrace around the Liberty Statue, and access to the northern and southern walls of the Citadel is now open. The landscaping is expected to be completed by 2026.
