🤝 Tim Cook steps down; Apple's crypto stance remains unchanged
Tim Cook exits Apple's CEO role on Tuesday, September 1, leaving behind a five-year stance against holding Bitcoin on the company's balance sheet. John Ternus, a hardware engineer with 25 years in device design, takes the helm—and has yet to publicly comment on cryptocurrency.
Cook addressed the question once, in November 2021, stating he owns crypto personally but would not recommend Apple invest in it. "I don't think people buy Apple stock to get exposure to crypto," he explained. Apple held $146.5 billion in cash and marketable securities as of June 27, according to company filings.
The real action may lie in payments infrastructure rather than treasury holdings. Reports in 2025 linked Apple to early discussions about using stablecoins to reduce settlement costs in its Services division, which generated $30.7 billion last quarter. Nothing has shipped publicly.
