In surah Aal 'Imran, Allah describes the good-doers in part by saying:
[وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلُوا]
... and they do not persist in what [sins] they have done ... [135]
Sahl ibn 'Abdullah said: The ignorant one is dead, the forgetful one is sleeping, the person sinning is intoxicated, and the persistent sinner is doomed. Persisting in sin is delaying, and delaying is when one says, "I will repent tomorrow." That is a claim he makes to himself, but how can he repent tomorrow when he has no control over tomorrow?!
