Pro-Palestine activist and philanthropist Fergie Chambers has been imprisoned in Spain since July 10, and tomorrow, the Spanish Council of Ministers decides whether to hand him over to Washington on a politically-motivated extradition request by the Trump administration.
■ The Spanish Constitution says extradition must be rejected if the alleged “crime” is political in nature. The Spanish government can also give Fergie permanent asylum.
■ Under Spanish law, the Council has the power to deny the extradition request before it moves into the judicial stage.
■ If the Council authorizes moving the file to the courts, it would be litigated in the National High Court, then the return to the Council of Ministers for final approval or veto. Even then, if it’s approved, the defense has multiple avenues left for appeals.
