We do not have Muhammad’s Quran. We have Uthman’s Quran—a codex compiled roughly twenty years after the Prophet’s death, after which the other copies were burned. Ibn Masʿūd, one of the Companions most knowledgeable about the Quran, refused to surrender his own recension: “Shall I abandon what I received directly from the Messenger of God?” Why were the variant Quranic traditions destroyed? What was in those copies that had to be hidden?
And the Sunnah? The greatest deception in our history. Bukhari arrived two centuries after the Prophet, gathered 600,000 reports, discarded 594,000 of them, and kept about 6,000. By his own standard, 99 percent of what people were circulating in the Prophet’s name was false. Yet we still build marriage, divorce, war, and law on the remaining 1 percent.
Second: the moral shock.
They tell you Islam came to liberate slaves. Historically, slavery persisted in the Islamic world for some 1,300 years and was abolished only under Western pressure. The verses on concubines (milk al-yamīn) were not abrogated; they were forcibly suspended. The slave market in Mecca did not close until 1962.
They tell you it is a religion of mercy. Open the classical law books: the chapter on the apostate, the chapter on stoning, the chapter on killing the one who abandons prayer, the chapter on crucifying combatants. This is not the jurisprudence of a fringe minority. It is the jurisprudence of the Shafiʿi, Hanbali, Maliki, and Hanafi schools. ISIS invented nothing. It simply read the old books and applied them literally; we read the same books and look away.
Third: the greatest shock—we worship history, not God.
The Islam practiced today is not the Islam of Mecca. It is the Islam of the Abbasid court: palaces, concubines, conquests, and spoils. The prayer you perform, in all its details, is not in the Quran. The number of rakʿahs, the method of ablution, the tashahhud—these were later juristic constructions.
The hijab imposed on women today did not exist in that form; it began as a class marker distinguishing free women from slaves.
They convinced you that criticizing the heritage is criticizing God. The opposite is true: the heritage has wronged God. When God is made to command the beating of wives, the stoning of women, and the killing of dissenters, that is not defense of the divine—it is distortion of the idea of God.
The problem is not that people ask questions. The problem is that an entire religion was built on forbidding them.
