• Cosmic Voids • Cosmic voids, also known as dark space, are vast regions between galaxy filaments—the largest structures in the universe—containing few or no galaxies. Despite their size, most galaxies are found in dense filaments rather than voids due to gravitational clustering. Void regions evolve differently from the universe as a whole. During a long phase, cosmic curvature dominates, preventing the formation of galaxy clusters and massive galaxies. Although voids still contain over 15% of the universe's average matter density, they appear nearly empty. Voids range from 10 to 100 megaparsecs (30 to 300 million light-years) in diameter, with exceptionally large ones, lacking rich superclusters, called supervoids. They were first identified in 1978 by Stephen Gregory and Laird A. Thompson at Kitt Peak National Observatory.
