This article challenges the earlier belief that human biological evolution slowed or stopped after the Neolithic Revolution. Based on the analysis of ~16,000 ancient genomes, it argues that human evolution has accelerated during the last 10,000 years, driven largely by cultural and environmental changes rather than remaining static. Key Anthropological Insights: 1. Human evolution is continuous: Evolution did not end with the emergence of agriculture or civilization. Ancient DNA (aDNA) demonstrates that natural selection continues to shape human populations in response to changing environments. 2. Culture as an evolutionary force (Biocultural Evolution): The article strongly supports the biocultural approach in anthropology: Agriculture → selection for lactase persistence and improved starch metabolism. Urbanization & domestication → stronger selection for immunity against infectious diseases. Migration to new environments → adaptations in skin pigmentation and oxygen metabolism. 3. Ancient DNA revolution: The use of ancient DNA sequencing has transformed biological anthropology by Reconstructing population history. Tracking genetic adaptations over time. Revealing gene flow, migration, and natural selection more accurately than skeletal evidence alone.
