“I’m a developer. Why do I need English?” – Let’s talk about it honestly
“I write code, not essays. Why should I care about English?” We get this question all the time. We’ve put together real work situations where developers need English every day.
Why getting by without English is hard:#1. All documentation is in English. Translations exist, but they often distort the original meaning. Reading the source directly beats guessing.
#2. Daily standups. Every morning you give a quick update on what you completed and what’s next. On cross-border teams, this sync happens entirely in English.
#3. Client communication. Representatives usually don’t speak Russian. If you can’t explain the task, they won’t understand you.
#4. Code reviews. PR comments, tickets, and architectural feedback are all in English. It’s about basic team collaboration, not showing off.
We don’t expect a flawless British accent. What matters is that you can keep a conversation going and explain what you mean.
