Garlic for Toenail Fungus? The Truth Behind This Viral Remedy Thick… — Dr. Alan Mandell — TG.ME

🧄🦶 Garlic for Toenail Fungus? The Truth Behind This Viral Remedy
Thick, yellow, crumbly toenails are often associated with onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nail. That’s why garlic has become a popular ingredient in homemade remedies.
Garlic contains allicin and other sulfur compounds with antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. 🧪 But there is a major difference between showing an effect against fungi in a laboratory and proving that raw garlic can cure a fungal nail infection in people.
⚠️ Please don't rub raw crushed garlic directly onto an infected nail or surrounding skin.
Garlic can cause significant irritation, blistering and even chemical burns, particularly when it is crushed and left against the skin under a bandage.
🦶 Why are fungal nails difficult to treat?
The fungus can live deep within the nail plate, making it difficult for home remedies to reach the infection. Successful treatment depends on the type and extent of the infection and may involve medicated topical antifungals or prescription oral treatment.
🔎 And not every abnormal nail is fungal. Trauma, psoriasis and other nail conditions can look similar.
The lesson isn't that natural remedies are useless. It's that the treatment has to reach the problem — without creating a second one.
If a nail is persistently thickened, discolored, painful, spreading to other nails, or not improving, proper diagnosis is much safer than experimenting with harsh household remedies.
