Edmund Ruffin, one of the leading agriculturalists of the 19th century, he is considered the father of soil science, but is best remembered as one of the most ardent Southern Nationalists who advocated for Southern Independence and personally fired the first shot on Fort Sumter.
He chose death rather than to live under the tyranny of Yankee rule and committed suicide wrapped in a Confederate flag at the end of the war.
