Chicago, 1860.
The streets were drowning in mud. The land was too flat for sewage to drain properly. Water collected beneath homes, inside cellars and across the roads.
So the city approved a solution that sounds impossible even now:
Raise the streets.
Raise the sidewalks.
Raise the buildings with them.

On Lake Street, engineers placed approximately 6,000 iron screws beneath a continuous row of stone and brick buildings.
The block stretched 320 feet.
It covered nearly one acre.
Contemporary estimates placed its weight at roughly 35,000 tons.
Around 600 workers stood beneath it.
Each man controlled several screws.
A signal was given.
Every screw turned one quarter-turn.
Then another signal.
Another quarter-turn.
Thousands of separate movements had to become one movement.
If one section rose too quickly, walls could split.
If one crew fell behind, the block could twist.
If the rhythm failed, 35,000 tons could answer at once.

But the rhythm did not fail.
Over five days, the occupied block rose approximately four feet eight inches.
The shops remained open.
The offices remained occupied.
Customers continued entering the buildings while the sidewalks, suspended with the structures, climbed beneath their feet.
The contemporary report claimed that not one pane of glass broke and not one crack appeared in the masonry.
They did not rebuild the block.
They moved it upward.

Not every building was raised.
Some owners left their original floors below the new street grade. Old entrances became basements. Windows designed for daylight disappeared beneath sidewalks. In surviving neighborhoods, houses still sit far below the roads around them.
So when you find an old arch, doorway or window buried beneath a modern street, do not accept “it was always a basement” as an answer.
Sometimes the building moved.
Sometimes the street moved.
Sometimes an entire city changed its ground level — and documented exactly how it was done.
