An engineer behind this 400-meter-running humanoid robot explained why its form looks so wonderfully weird.
The team originally gave it a human-style arm swing, but the motion put too much strain on the shoulder joints, caused overheating and stopped the robot from finishing 400 meters.
So during simulated learning, the robot gradually came up with its own solution: keep its hands up near its face, reduce shoulder movement and let the legs do the work.
Nobody taught it to run like this. It basically figured out its own weird little technique.
