1. What Is Money? Understanding the Evolution of Currency
💡 Financial Education Series #1
Before digital currencies, before bank cards, and even before paper money, people exchanged goods directly through a system called barter.
The barter system worked by trading one item for another. For example, a farmer might exchange rice for clothes. However, this system had limitations because both parties needed to want what the other person offered.
To solve this problem, societies gradually adopted standardized forms of money. Over time, precious metals such as gold and silver became widely accepted because they were durable, divisible, and scarce.
Later, governments introduced paper currency and modern banking systems. Today, digital payments allow people to transfer value electronically across the world.
Understanding how money evolved helps us better understand why new forms of currency, including digital currencies, continue to emerge.
