For the first time in decades, NATO allies held submarine-hunting drills off Iceland without U.S. ships or aircraft, as European and Canadian forces took the lead in defending the North Atlantic.
The exercise focused on the GIUK Gap, a key route for Russian nuclear-powered submarines entering the Atlantic, amid growing concerns over Russia and the U.S. pullback from Europe.
