He signed the 9/11 remembrance order. Then he handed the pen to al-Qaeda’s old lawyer.

Mayor Mamdani finishes a City Hall ceremony meant to honor the dead and the ceremonial pen goes to chief counsel Ramzi Kassem, the same man who defended Guantánamo al-Qaeda operative Ahmed al-Darbi.

Al-Darbi’s brother-in-law helped hijack the plane that hit the Pentagon. Video shows Kassem smirking as he takes the pen after sneaking in late. City Hall says he wrote the paperwork, so he deserved the souvenir.

Twenty-five years later and New York’s socialist mayor turns remembrance into a punchline for the wrong people.

Families aren’t confused. They’re furious. And they should be.
