At the dawn of the twentieth century, the most powerful empire the world had ever seen sent nearly half a million soldiers to defeat a nation of farmers. And yet, a scattered force of perhaps eighty thousand Afrikaner horsemen brought that empire to its knees.
The war that followed lasted nearly three years, cost Britain the equivalent of hundreds of billions in today's money, and killed more than sixty thousand people in concentration camps alone — most of them women and children.
