What was supposed to be a journey toward a second chance at life, instead became a test of survival thousands of miles away from home.
When Mr. Assefa Wolde Gergeno’s kidneys began to fail, his wife, Tesfanesh Erdedo Ayano, became his donor, selflessly giving up one of her own kidneys so her husband could live. Together, they traveled from Ethiopia to India for an urgent, life-saving transplant at Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi.
The surgery itself was a hard-won success. But as they began to breathe a sigh of relief, the battle shifted.
Before the procedure could even begin, unexpected medical complications arose. Doctors discovered critical, underlying issues with Mr. Assefa’s heart, stomach, and thyroid that required immediate, aggressive treatment.
These unforeseen medical crises did more than threaten his health; they completely broke their budget, quickly depleting every single penny of the funds they had saved and brought with them.
Today, they find themselves stranded in a hospital room in New Delhi. His new kidney is functioning beautifully, but without 500,000 Birr for mandatory post-transplant follow-up tests and daily life-saving medications, Mr. Assefa cannot safely recover, and they cannot return home.
Ruthful Hearts has donated 10,000 ETB as a small push towards their goal.
