AfD co-chair believes Friedrich Merz will be replaced 'before Christmas'
Speaking after a historic win for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in a key state election, co-chairwoman Alice Weidal says she expects early federal elections and for current chancellor Friedrich Merz to be 'replaced before Christmas'.
The AfD party won more than 44 per cent of the vote, becoming the largest partt in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, representing the first far-right win in the country since World War II.
The AfD leadership has sought to present the party as an unflinching supporter of Israel despite repeated antisemitic and Holocaust-revisionist statements from figures within its ranks.
During a conversation with Elon Musk in January 2025, Weidel described her party as โthe only protector of the Jewish peopleโ in Germany.
