In the United States, people are about twice as likely to approve of coal plants being built nearby as opposed to data centers.

According to the Financial Times, 80% or more distrust AI in areas such as autonomous driving, medical advice and corporate hiring.

The backlash is unusually bipartisan. It runs through the political center, the MAGA right and the democratic-socialist left rather than fitting the normal left/right divide.

The attitude is completely different in China where a large majority believes that AI products and services have more benefits than drawbacks.

America is unusually anti-AI while China remains one of the world's most AI-optimistic societies.
