Unlike centralized servers trying to keep others out, Mastodon's decentralized platform is designed to be inclusive of everyone

April 2023: What is ActivityPub, and why does it matter?

A number of tech companies have thrown their resources into ActivityPub and what’s now known as “the Fediverse.” Tumblr is working with ActivityPub, as are Flipboard, Medium, Mozilla, and even Meta

There’s now an official WordPress plug-in for ActivityPub, which will enable the protocol for something like half the internet all at once. Developers are using ActivityPub to build new and different takes on YouTube, Instagram, and much more. ActivityPub is everywhere! ActivityPub!

And, of course, there’s Mastodon, the ActivityPub–powered platform that has become a haven to Twitter Quitters all over the internet.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 But ask around the tech industry, and there’s a growing set of people who will tell you the future isn’t Mastodon but what it represents: a scaled ActivityPub-based social platform 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
So what is ActivityPub? It’s a technology through which social networks can be made interoperable, connecting everything to a single social graph and content-sharing system. It’s governed by open protocols, not closed platforms. It aims to give control back to users and to make sure that the social web is bigger than any single company
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️

Example of how decentralized social media would work:

If our current social system was decentralized, you’d be able to post a picture on Instagram and I could see it and comment on it in the Twitter app. Your friends could read your tweets in their TikTok app. I could exclusively use Tumblr, and you could read all my posts in Telegram. Different apps would have different strengths and weaknesses, different moderation policies and creator tools, but you’d have the same set of followers and follow the same accounts no matter which platform you use. There would be no such thing as “Facebook friends” and “Twitter followers.” The social graph and the product market would split completely

May 2023: Flipboard becomes first app to support Bluesky, Mastodon and Pixelfed all in one place. Despite Bluesky being built on a different protocol (AT Protocol), Blueysky and Mastodon users can interact with both networks directly from Flipboard’s app. Flipboard CEO Mike McCue isn’t worried about the competing standards, as he believes the problems will be resolved over time

November 2023: Bluesky is a decentralized social app by Jack Dorsey with a federated design and community-specific moderation built on the AT Protocol, but Bluesky plans to be federated. So, if a developer outside of Bluesky built their own new social app using the AT Protocol, Bluesky users could jump over to the new app and port over their existing followers, handle and data. In November, Bluesky announced their intention to launch its federation "early next year." (read 2024)

😈 This means it will work more like Mastodon where users can pick and choose which servers to join and move their accounts around at will 😈

November 2023: Pebble Reborn as Mastodon Server After Twitter Rivalry Ends. New phase of Pebble is spearheaded by its co-founder and CEO, Gabor Cselle, as an innovative social venture. Cselle explained that the decision to create a Mastodon instance came at the request of the Pebble community

Other major platforms already using ActivityPub protocol's Fediverse:

- Mastodon
- Discord
- WordPress
- Gab
- Trump's Truth Social
-
Threads (by Meta/Instagram)

GitLab (DevOps) and Forgejo/Gitea (software dev hosting, bug tracking, code review, continuous integration) coming soon

🦄🥷🦄 Telegram is already interoperable with ActivityPub

What is ActivityPub, and why does it matter?
I thought about putting this article in one of the Twitter-related threads, but this protocol isn’t really about replacing Twitter but about pulling your social connections out of the hands of any...
