The world of science is mourning the loss of Prof. Ada Yonath, one of Israel's most celebrated scientists, who passed away at the age of 87.
Yonath was a pioneer in the study of the ribosome - the tiny cellular structure responsible for protein production - and her groundbreaking research transformed our understanding of one of life's most fundamental processes, paving the way for the development of new antibiotics and life-saving medicines.
When she began her research, much of the scientific community believed her goal was impossible. She and her colleagues conducted approximately 25,000 experiments before successfully creating the first ribosome crystals - a feat that ultimately earned her the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009, as well as the Israel Prize.
She continued to research, publish, and run an active laboratory at the Weizmann Institute of Science until her final days. The Weizmann Institute paid tribute to her, saying: "She showed generations of scientists what can be achieved when you dare to ask big questions and refuse to give up on the relentless search for answers."
