His letter, commonly called 1 Clement, was written from Rome to Corinth toward the end of the first century. Clement is valuable for this study because he stands close to the apostolic generation. His letter repeatedly appeals to the Apostles, Scriptures, Abraham, Jacob, Israel, kindred, and Godโ€™s promises. Clement continually reasons through the language and examples of Scripture. His importance to our people was recognized by later Christians. Irenaeus knew and cited Clementโ€™s letter. There is also a connection with the Shepherd of Hermas. In Vision 2.4, Hermas is instructed to give a writing to Clement, who is to send it to cities abroad, Paul also refers to clement in Philippians 4:3 showing that he was direct contact with the Apostles.
