Bill Gates says we’ve entered a “turbulent era of AI.” It could wipe out entire job sectors, fuel fraud and deepfakes, lower the barrier to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, and reshape how children grow up.
He’d back a realistic global plan to slow AI’s rise—but doesn’t expect one, as geopolitical and economic forces are too powerful. In an interview with Axios, he warned that the current path has a high likelihood of ending badly, and criticized both major U.S. political parties for failing to act.
His proposal? Reserve certain jobs exclusively for humans, and tax robots and AI tokens—using the revenue generated from AI replacing human labor to support society. Despite the risks, he remains hopeful about AI’s potential in agriculture, healthcare, and education.
