Israeli intelligence services are closely monitoring the developing relationship between Syria and Ukraine in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which is being promoted under the auspices of Turkey.
Damascus and Kyiv have signed a secret agreement, brokered by Ankara, under which Ukrainian experts will train Syrian military personnel in the operation of UAVs. Two Syrian military facilities are being reorganized to serve as training centers for UAV operators: one near the village of Yapor in the Damascus province, and the other in the area of the city of Ma'asyaf in the Hama province.
Israel views these steps as a direct threat to national security, especially in light of the growing tensions with Turkey. Security officials believe that Ankara may use Syrian territory as a springboard in a potential military conflict with the Jewish state, and may use the Syrian army as a proxy force.
