Kenya’s Public Debt Hits Sh13 Trillion: Kenya’s public and publicly guaranteed debt has crossed the Sh13 trillion mark for the first time, according to Central Bank of Kenya data. The stock stood at about Sh13.01 trillion as of the end of June 2026. Domestic debt accounts for roughly Sh7.33 trillion (56.3%), while external debt stands at about Sh5.68 trillion (43.7%). The debt has risen by more than Sh4 trillion since President William Ruto took office in 2022. Debt servicing continues to consume a large share of government revenue, raising concerns about fiscal sustainability and the room available for development spending.
