Government to Give Livestock Digital IDs Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe is pushing for the nationwide rollout of the Animal Identification and Traceability System (ANITRAC). The system will assign unique digital identities to cows, goats and sheep across Kenya. Animals will be physically tagged using visual ear tags or microchips linked to a central digital platform. The records will capture each animal’s origin, ownership details, health status, vaccination history and movement history. Authorised users including veterinarians, abattoirs, traders and government agencies will be able to verify an animal’s background at any point. Kagwe said the system will help curb livestock theft and cattle rustling by making it harder for stolen animals to change hands undetected. It will also strengthen disease surveillance, improve food safety and help Kenya meet international market requirements for meat and livestock exports.
