Rather, this servant shows his preparedness by doing the same work of the Lord so that when the Lord walks in unannounced, the servant will be found at his duty.

We too are called to be faithful and wise servants, fully awake and ready for our Master’s return at any time. We do so not with our heads hidden in the clouds, nor glassy-eyed gazing into the horizon, nor idly waiting for death or the world to come to an end, but with faithful commitment to the work that has been assigned to us in the Lord’s vineyard. To be alert, to be ready, to be prepared means, dutifully and faithfully carrying out our responsibilities rather than neglecting them in the mistaken belief that we can make up for lost time in the end. We may never have this luxury “because you do not know the day when your master is coming.”
