🇨🇾 Cyprus Moves Another Step Closer to Schengen

The European Commission has given a positive assessment of Cyprus’s readiness to join the Schengen Area. The next important stage will come in September, when the matter is expected to be presented to the Council of the EU. Final accession will require the unanimous approval of all 25 EU countries participating in the Schengen Area.

Cyprus has been working towards this goal for several years:
▪️ 2019 – the Schengen accession process began
▪️ 2023 – Cyprus joined the Schengen Information System
▪️ 2026 – the European Commission included the completion of Cyprus’s accession among its priorities
▪️ September 2026 – the matter moves to the Council of the EU

💡 This is particularly important for investors and holders of Cyprus permanent residence permits. At present, a Cyprus residence permit alone does not provide the right to travel freely within the Schengen Area.

Once Cyprus becomes a full member, the rules for Cyprus permanent residence permit holders are expected to change in line with the Schengen framework, significantly expanding opportunities for travel across Europe.
