Farakka Barrage Basic Facts
Location: Murshidabad district, West Bengal Built across the Ganga River.
Commissioned: 21 April 1975.
Construction began in 1961 and was completed in 1975.
Length: approximately 2,240–2,245 metres.
The barrage diverts water through the Farakka Feeder Canal towards the Bhagirathi–Hooghly system.
Its major objective was to flush out silt and improve the navigability of the Hooghly River, particularly to support the Kolkata port system.
