A Wake-Up Call for Hospital Safety in Ethiopia
It’s deeply saddening to hear about the recent fire accident at Wolayta Sodo University Hospital, a place meant to save lives now damaged by a preventable incident. Thankfully, reports indicate there was no loss of life, but the impact on healthcare delivery is still significant.
This tragic event is a stark reminder that many of our healthcare facilities lack basic fire safety systems, including:
1. Early warning systems (smoke detectors, fire alarms)
2. Fire suppression equipment (sprinklers, extinguishers)
3. Regular electrical and oxygen system inspections
4. Staff training on emergency response protocols
Hospitals are high-risk environments, flammable oxygen systems, high-voltage medical equipment, and crowded spaces require robust safety plans and infrastructure.
My Recommendations for Ethiopian Hospitals:
1.Conduct regular fire risk assessments in all departments.
2.Install and maintain fire detection and suppression systems.
3.Train staff regularly on emergency evacuation procedures.
4.Ensure proper maintenance of electrical systems and medical gas pipelines.
5.Collaborate with biomedical engineers and facility managers to identify vulnerabilities.
6.We cannot afford to wait for another disaster to act. Patient safety starts with preparedness.
