For more than a century, archaeologists believed they understood the interior of Sahure’s Pyramid at Abusir. Then modern scanning technology revealed something completely unexpected: a hidden void behind a wall that earlier researchers had identified as solid infill.
A joint Czech-Egyptian conservation mission was examining structural deterioration when ground-penetrating radar detected a clean, bounded space hidden behind the masonry. Repeated scans confirmed the anomaly, leading researchers to create a small opening and send a camera inside carefully.
What the camera showed was extraordinary. The previously sealed chamber contained vivid paintings in blue, red, yellow, black, and white, remarkably preserved after roughly 4,500 years in darkness.
The scenes included a marsh-hunting sequence, a procession carrying unidentified objects on poles, and another partially covered scene with human figures arranged in unusual positions. Some of these elements do not fit neatly into what researchers traditionally expected from Fifth Dynasty royal pyramid decoration.
Scientific analysis added another layer to the mystery. X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy indicated pigments consistent with the Old Kingdom period, including Egyptian blue, ochres, carbon black, and gypsum. However, researchers also detected an unexpected egg-based binding medium whose use in Old Kingdom wall painting remains unexplained.
The discovery could have important implications for understanding the development of Egyptian funerary art. Traditionally, fully decorated pyramid interiors are associated with the later reign of Unas, making a painted chamber inside Sahure’s pyramid especially significant.
Even more intriguing, radar surveys of nearby structures reportedly detected another reproducible void anomaly inside the ruined pyramid of Neferefre. Researchers have emphasised that this does not prove another painted chamber exists, but it raises the possibility that Abusir may still contain unexplored spaces.
