The Wall Street Journal reports that Iran launched a second, previously undisclosed attack on U.S. Navy ships Monday, following weekend ballistic missile attacks against a U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer. No U.S. ships were hit, but the repeated attacks are raising concerns among U.S. officials that Iran is employing more sophisticated missile technology and may be receiving assistance from China or Russia in tracking American warships.

Iranian state media has claimed the use of new missiles with advanced guidance capabilities. Weapons analysts told the Journal that systems equipped with electro-optical seekers could use imagery to maneuver toward moving targets, but Iran would still need an approximate location for the ships before launching the attack. That has prompted questions about whether foreign assistance could be helping Tehran locate U.S. naval forces.

The attacks come as the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and sanctions continue to pressure Tehran. Following the weekend attacks, U.S. forces struck three Iranian oil tankers, which Washington said were part of a network funding the IRGC and its proxies. The Journal reports that 19 U.S. warships are currently supporting operations in the Middle East.
