Why in news?
Zomato has introduced a zero-tolerance policy for analogue dairy dishes, delisting dishes declared to contain such products and asking restaurants to switch to natural dairy or remove the dishes. The move comes amid increased scrutiny by FSSAI and state food-safety authorities.
Quick concept:
Dairy analogue ≠ automatically “fake” or unsafe dairy.
It is a product that resembles a dairy product but uses non-milk ingredients to replace some or all milk constituents. Vegetable fats, proteins, starches and other permitted ingredients may be used.
The bigger concern is misrepresentation. FSSAI has clarified that a cheese analogue cannot simply be sold or served as “paneer” because that can mislead consumers about what they are actually consuming.
CAPF takeaway:
Remember the chain: Food technology → Nutrition → Food safety → Labelling → Consumer protection → FSSAI.
