ICYMI🚨: Newly obtained 2012 emails show Dr. Anthony Fauci explicitly instructing an NIH aide to permanently delete an email concerning controversial gain-of-function influenza research.
“Please delete this e-mail and then delete from the deleted file,” Fauci wrote in March 2012 after discussing criticism of NIH-funded experiments that engineered an H5N1 bird-flu virus to become transmissible between ferrets.
The emails also show Fauci privately pushing back against concerns raised by the New York Times and worrying that NIH biosecurity advisers could continue recommending restrictions on publication of the research.
The timing could now matter legally: Biden’s preemptive pardon of Fauci covers federal offenses from January 1, 2014 through January 2025. This email predates that protection by nearly two years.
Federal law does criminalize certain intentional destruction or concealment of government records — but whether Fauci’s instruction violated those statutes would depend on facts including the status of the record, whether it was actually destroyed, and his intent.
