The Fig Tree
Learning vigilance:
The Lord Jesus uses the fig tree image to teach us to be vigilant and prepared for His soon return: โLearn from the fig treeโฆ when its branch has become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.โ (Matt. 24:32; Mark 13:28). Just as the leaves on the fig tree branches sprout as signs of summer, there are many other โsigns of the timesโ that announce Jesusโ return: deceivers, wars, disasters (Mark 13; Matt. 24). A special omen that makes us hear the footsteps of the coming Messiah, we see in Israel, since 1948 as a State in the land of promise. A call to vigilance. Learn from the fig tree: โTake heed, watch and prayโฆโ (Mark 13:33).
