On this day in 1793, Rev. Richard Johnson opened Australia’s first church. The simple timber structure carried enormous meaning for the fledgling colony.
Johnson had previously been preaching outdoors or in makeshift shelters. With scarce resources and convict labour, he oversaw the construction of a modest church that quickly became a centre for gatherings, education, and community life. In a harsh and uncertain settlement, the building represented hope, order and the beginnings of social structure.
Though the original church no longer stands, its legacy endures in the parish of St Philip’s and in the foundations of Australia’s early civic identity.
